What is hydrocarbon resin? What are its uses?

Hydrocarbon Resins are made from petroleum based feedstocks either aliphatic (C5), aromatic (C9), DCPD (dicyclopentadiene), or mixtures of these. There are three basic categories of hydrocarbon tackifier resins, some with several sub-categories.

Hydrocarbon resin, also called petroleum resin, is a by-product of petroleum cracking. It has a tackifying effect and is use in paint, printing ink, adhesives, rubber and other application areas.

The features of the resin are resistant to water, resistant to ethanol, acid and alkaline. In general, they are not used as main binder but used as modifier together with other kinds of resin in hot-melt adhesive, pressure-sensitive adhesive or hot melt road marking paint etc.

The Major Types of Hydrocarbon Resins

The major types of hydrocarbon resins include:

  • C5 resins
  • C9 resins
  • C5/C9 copolymer resins
  • Hydrogenated resins

C5 resins are produced from aliphatic crackers. It has good flowability, water resistance, weatherability, adhesion and is suitable for hot melt road marking paint and tackifier.

C9 resins are produced from aromatic crackers. It has good heat stability, light stability, flowability, adhesion and is suitable for paint, adhesive and printing ink industries.

C5/C9 copolymer resins are produced from both aliphatic crackers and aromatic crackers. The variation in aliphatic and aromatic composition enable these products to be useful in natural rubber, styrene butadiene rubber (SBR), nitrile-butadiene rubber (NBR) and ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) for hot melt applications.

In the case of hydrogenated resins, hydrogen was used to neutralized the double bonds of the resin and light colour even water clear resins can be produced. There are hydrogenated C5 resins, hydrogenated C9 resins and hydrogenated C5/C9 resins.
