The Cost Saving Replacement for Titanium Dioxide: Opaque Polymer

Are you looking for a raw material for partial replacement of titanium dioxide to achieve cost saving while maintain equal hiding?
As it was discussed in few of our previous blogs, titanium dioxide (TiO2) is an expensive ingredient in paint. In order to reduce down the cost of paint formulation, you can partially substitute Tio2 with calcined kaolin. However, there is another replacement for TiO2.
Opaque polymer is a hollow particle consisting of a hard shell with a hollow core. When manufactured, it has a form of non-film-forming hard emulsion polymer encapsulating water inside. When this emulsion polymer particles become dry in a paint film, the water diffuses out from the core, leaving a void filled with air.
It looks like a milky white liquid similar to any other emulsions, but when it dries out, it becomes a pigment like opaque white powder. It has no film-forming potential. Thus, it is treated as part of pigmentation when calculating the PVC of a paint.
Each particle with its encapsulated air void acts as a site for light scattering due to the difference in refractive index between the polymer shell and the air. The light scattering results in opaque white appearance of the dry opaque polymer powder.
There are several opaque polymers out there. However, we are more confident in introducing opaque polymer from one of our supplier, Arkema.
