Calcined Kaolin : The solution to escalating price of Titanium Dioxide

Are you facing difficulty in maintaining the raw material cost of your paint due to escalating price of TiO2?
Coating customers are looking for ways to reduce their formulation cost due to escalating of Titanium Dioxide (TiO2) price. The below three grades of calcined kaolin from Imerys were tested for partial replacement of TiO2 to reduce the paint formulation cost.

The test was conducted in a 80% PVC paint formulation. 80% PVC-1 is the reference formula which contained 4% TiO2 and 7% common grade of calcined kaolin. In 80% PVC-2, 3 and 4, TiO2 was reduced to 3% and the dosage of Imerys calcined kaolin was 8%.

The test results showed that :
- Wet opacity become poorer when TiO2 was reduced.
- Dry opacity of 80% PVC-2, 3 and 4 has increased significantly especially with PoleStar 400 and NeoGen 2000.
- Scrub resistance of 80% PVC-2, 3 and 4 has reduced due to TiO2 reduction and increase in oil absorption of calcined kaolin.
- PoleStar 400 has showed improvement in reducing syneresis.
Imerys’ calcined kaolin is very effective for partial replacement of TiO2 but customers have to do re-formulation to achieve the balance of cost, opacity and scrub resistance.
