SNAP 720: A Novel Acrylic Latex Technology based on Structured Nano-Acrylic Polymers

Low VOC Waterborne Coatings

Are you aware of the challenges involved in enhancing the performance of low-VOC WB coatings?

One of the on-going trends in waterborne (WB) architectural coatings is the adoption of softer polymers with low minimum film formation temperature (MFFT), driven by the demand for low-VOC. However, such soft binders may result in poor film hardness which may affects many important resistance properties. (eg. scratch, abrasion, dirt pickup) The poor antiblocking characteristics can cause the tearing or peeling of the paints as well.

Despite the efforts of the coatings industry to enhance the performance of low-VOC WB coatings, the problems are still found. The common practices in the industry include:

  • Blending a soft, film-forming latex with a small-particle-size, high-Tg modifier: the inherent incompatibility between most polymer pairs in general hinders the development of cohesive strength. 
  • Designing structured emulsion polymers with internal hard and soft domains inside the latex particle: antiblocking and print resistance are still found to be deficient because most self-filming binders have limited potential to develop adequate bulk modulus and surface hardness.

Then what could be the solution? We are able to offer a novel acrylic latex technology based on structured nano-acrylic polymers that can tackle the issue mentioned above.

What is SNAP 720?

SNAP 720 is a Structured Nano-Acrylic Polymers for high gloss coatings applications. There have been successful projects on Decorative Wood Paint for high gloss achievements with the help of this product. ( 80% on 60°)

Its nano particle structure (< 80 nm) provides the excellent penetration to enhance the adhesion and to improve the film hardness for good blocking and dirt pickup resistance.

The product is EnVia® certified and is applicable in Low VOC applications (capable from 0-50 g/L).
