Moving away from isothiazolinone-based preservatives, what are your future alternatives which are cost-effective?
Methylisothiazolinone (MIT) and Benzisothiazolinone (BIT) are two of the most common preservatives found in cleaning products such as laundry and dish detergents. Isothiazolinone-based preservatives are proven to protect wide range of formulations against bacterial and fungal growth effectively at low cost. However, isothiazolinone-based preservatives have also been linked to many potential problems such as skin allergic reactions and safety issues. With a stricter EU regulation on skin allergic issues, Europe is banning MIT-based preservatives from Home, Industrial and Institutional Care Products by 2020.
On the other hands, BIT supply has been an issue since the first China chemical plant explosion in 2015. The recent chemical plant explosion in China causes a further shortage in supply of BIT-based preservative. This leads to price increase by 1.5 times of the original price.
With a greater awareness that isothiazolinone-based preservatives will soon be discontinued, manufacturing companies should consider the replacement of both BIT and MIT. Troyguard 44 is a water-soluble preservative solution to protect water-based homecare formulations from bacterial and fungal growth at low dosage.
Troyguard 44 consist of 50% Sodium N-(Hydroxymethyl) glycinate which is derived from glycerin, a natural occurring amino acid.

- Mix phase A until the solution becomes homogenous at room temperature
- Add phase B step by step to phase A at room temperature
- Pre-disperse phase C at room temperature, then add to bulk no.2 in temperature 40℃-50℃, mix until it becomes homogenous
- Add phase E and mix until it becomes homogenous
- Adjust the pH in range 5,5 – 6,5, continue to do cooling
