Do you know how to minimize the cost of high PVC emulsion paint?

High Pigment Volume Concentration (PVC) Emulsion Paint definitely has certain market share in SEA country. High PVC paint can be easily found out in Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia and Southern Vietnam. Generally, all emulsion paints which have more than 80% of PVC were considered as high PVC paint. As compared with low & medium PVC paint markets, high PVC paint market is more sensitive to price. In terms of performance, constomers are more concerned with the opacity rather than wet scrub, efflorescence or water resistance.

Generally, emulsion paint consists of 4 main components. They are binder, additive, carrier and pigment (sometimes with filler). When it comes to the cost of paint, binder and titanium dioxide (TiO2) play important roles in determining it. Due to the intense competition, most of the binders in the market have similar prices. Hence, in the paint formulation, it is hard for paint formulators to further reduce raw material cost via binder. Because of that, most of them will seek to reduce the price from the alternative component, TiO2. Unfortunately, with current technology, there is no raw material that can compete with TiO2 for opacity. Currently, they use certain ingredients to partially replace TiO2 in order to minimize the cost. Calcined clay, organo clay, aluminium silicate are the examples of partial replacement of TiO2.

So far, calcined clay is the most popular for formulating high PVC paint. This is due to the price, and the calcined clay can reduce the dosage of TiO2. The most popular calcined clay is the one from China. However, this has poorer opacity when compared to other TiO2 spacers, and it does not contribute much in reducing formulation cost.

However, our calcined clay can overcome such problem by maintaining the opacity and reducing the dosage of TiO2.

Advantages of Maha Calcinated Clay

  • Opacity is much better than Chinese calcined clay
  • Formulation without TiO2 is possible for 83-90% PVC paint
  • By using new generation calcined clay, it would be more cost saving for overall paint cost
  • It could be 10-15% cost saving for 80% PVC Paint formulation

We conducted the comparison tests on how our calcinated clay can replace TiO2. We made 4 formulations of 84% PVC paint, and they are as the following:

  • Calcinated Clay (China Source) + TiO2
  • Modified Calcinated Clay
  • Hydrous Kaolin
  • Our Calcinated Clay

And the result is as the following shows:

The formulation number 4 (Our Calcinated Clay) achieved the comparable result with the conventional formulation (number 1) with the 10% reduction of cost.
