The potential impacts of iodopropynyl butyl carbamate (IPBC) and methylisothiazolinone (CMIT/MIT) preservative has been circulating online for many years. However, many manufacturing companies are still using IPBC and CMIT/MIT products that was banned by EU. According to EcoWaste Coalition*, FDA reported that there is widespread sale in Manila on baby wipes which contain methylisothiazolinone (CMIT/MIT) preservatives. These preservatives have been prohibited in leave-on products since 2017 as they trigger allergic contact dermatitis (ACD).
On the other hand, IPBC was found in Super Soft Skin Care Wet Towel , even though it was supposed to be banned to be used in products intended for children under 3 years of age. According to EU, IPBC may penetrate into the skin of the infant and cause adverse effects on the thyroid gland’s function. Hence, it is important for end-users to be aware of this when selecting baby products.
Despite IPBC and CMIT/MIT are dangerous to be used in baby products, the usage of these preservatives by local manufacturers still continues. This is mainly due to the limited options of cost-efficient and safe preservatives available. However, we provide you the solution to solve these challenges. They are as given in the table below:
